  • Photo ID for you (and spouse)
  • Social Security cards or ITINs for everyone on the return
  • Last year's tax return (new clients — we review it free)
  • Bank account & routing number for direct deposit
  • IRS Identity Protection PIN, if you have one

income

  • W-2s from every employer
  • 1099-NEC / 1099-K for gig & self-employment income
  • 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B for bank interest & investments
  • 1099-R / SSA-1099 for retirement & Social Security
  • Rental income & expense records
  • Crypto transaction summaries
  • Unemployment 1099-G

deductions & credits

  • Childcare provider name, address, EIN and amounts paid
  • 1098-T tuition statements & education expenses
  • 1098 mortgage interest statement
  • Property tax payments
  • Charitable donation receipts
  • Medical expenses (if substantial)
  • Student loan interest (1098-E)
  • Retirement & HSA contributions made outside payroll

business owners

  • Profit & loss statement (or let our bookkeepers build it)
  • Business bank/card statements if books need cleanup
  • Asset purchases (equipment, vehicles) with dates & amounts
  • Home office square footage
  • Business miles log
  • Payroll reports & 1099s issued
